My spirit isn’t exactly troubled these days, but it is brimful of ideas, hopes, questions, plans, and projects. September means a new crop of apprentices arriving at the Village; new products and fall training for our soapmakers. Outside of all that 9-5 work, I’m leading a seminar here in Austin called “Craft & Culture: Practicing Virtue in an Automated Age,” and presenting a paper on craft and the re-enchantment of the world at the Southwest Conference on Christianity and Literature.
Needless to say, I haven’t had much time for sewing or large projects, but I’ve picked my knitting needles back up. I’m so thankful for projects that can endure distraction, travel, and inattention — yet still produce beautiful and useful things. Hopefully I’ll have enough spare moments this month to finish the second sock in a pair for my very patient husband.
